Climate change is a hot topic, both literally and metaphorically; how we all contribute to it, and what we should do to reduce its effects. Whilst MediaCom as an organisation is carbon neutral within our own immediate sphere of influence, there is a wider impact caused by the media we plan and buy on behalf of our clients, and MediaCommitted is an initiative designed to take our carbon-neutrality into another level.
So MediaCom North are implementing what we believe to be a Media Agency first – carbon zero scheduling.
The idea evolved from our annual group-wide competition - If I Ran the Company’. Each year, we challenge staff to devise ideas on how MediaCom can become better, and this year teams were asked to think how we could make a difference to businesses and community alike. The big idea is that every media we use is analysed and a carbon pollution factor is applied to it. (We are proud to be associated with award-winning carbon offset company co2Balance to facilitate this).
Each medium will have a different factor depending on the level of carbon emissions generated in its manufacture / distribution and /or broadcast. The combined factors on any media schedule produce a small carbon offset or MediaCommitted charge which when collected is donated to a variety of sustainable energy or low emission technology projects.
The progress of MediaCommitted's investment will be regularly reported via our website, and we are actively encouraging media owners and clients to support us in some or all of the process. We are currently awaiting our official certificate into the Carbon Zero Federation.
